Alexa estimates traffic rank by gathering tracking data from millions of browser toolbars. This data is crunched in various ways to report back relative rank, estimated reach and the average number of page views per visitor.

Compete works similarly to Alexa, in that the source of data comes from millions of browser toolbars. Compete provides free information for every site on the Internet including site traffic history and competitive analytics; a list of available promotional codes across thousands of online retailers; and site-specific trust scores based on up-to-the-minute data from Compete and third party security services.

Ranking.com tracks several hundred thousand 'Net surfers with their market research software  as they visit various websites during the previous month. Ranking.com does not publish the actual traffic metrics to a website but rather the relative popularity ranking of domains in relation to all the websites visited by the sample group.

Like most of the other traffic rank estimators, Netcraft uses a browser toolbar to report back web visits and other tracking data in order to determine relative rank and related website attributes.

DomainTools.com offers a wide variety of free and fee-based tools to help you learn all there is to know about a given domain. Tools include Whois, domain history, reverse IP, traceroute, partial name search, bulk availability checking and many more.

Type in a domain name and this wonderful tools queries the owner's DNS server and reports back all kinds of good information. This is also an excellent tool to see if a DNS server is correctly configured for a given domain. It performs a variety of tests on the data it finds and issues a comprehensive report detailing every setting and whether or not the found value makes sense or is within an acceptable range.

This site contains over a dozen free DNS, IP and email query and testing tools. You can also use this site to see if your domain or IP is on a SPAM list.

Search out domains, including partial names embedded within existing domains. Excellent research tool to seek out similarly-named domains, competitors and previously-owned domains.

HTML Tools

Having well-formed HTML is vital to achieving top search engine rankings. We recommend checking your pages for compliance with the current standards for HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0.

This is the W3C Markup Validation Service, a free service that checks Web documents in formats like HTML and XHTML for conformance to W3C Recommendations and other standards.

This is a wonderful HTML and XHTML validator that is simple to use and provides great error reports.

HTML Tidy is a tool for checking and cleaning up HTML source files. It is especially useful for finding and correcting errors in deeply nested HTML, or for making grotesque code legible once more.
